Questions about hosting

What's the difference between hosting and a maintenance plan?

Hosting is the server your site runs on, including running it, backing it up and monitoring it. A maintenance plan covers WordPress on top of the server: updates to WordPress, themes, plugins and PHP, security and optimization. You can get both from us.

What is managed hosting?

With managed hosting, the provider takes care of the server: setup, server software updates, security, backups and monitoring. You don't have to administer a server yourself, as you would with a regular VPS.

Is shared hosting enough for an online store?

For a small store with few visitors, it can work. But on shared hosting your site shares processing power and memory with other sites on the same server, and the cart, checkout and account pages can't be cached as a whole. The more orders you get, the more you'll notice it.

What should I remember about DNS when I switch hosts?

Your domain needs to point to the new server. Lower the TTL on your DNS records well before the move, so the switch takes effect quickly, and remember your email records (MX, SPF and DKIM) if your email is with the same provider.
